Energy Flows Where Your Focus Goes

Dear Awesome Woman,

“How do you not hit the rocks?” Life coach Martha Beck asks the passenger next to her, a professional whitewater rafter.

“If you pay attention to where the water flows between the rocks, then that’s where you’ll go. If you pay attention to the rocks, then, bam! — that’s where you’ll go,” the wise athlete replied.

In order to survive the current, the white water rafter knew what he needed to do — he needed to focus on where he desired to go. And that was where the water flowed. For us to survive the currents in this world, we need to focus on where we desire to go. Our energy will flow in that current and we’ll not only survive but thrive.

And I know that it can be hard to focus on something that you want, when the winds of change and difficult life circumstances can be so painful. It can feel like all you’re doing is hitting the rocks.

One of my sons is finally recovering from a 4 year bout with a horrible autoimmune disease. I used my somatic techniques on myself to remain sane through the mostly downs and scary times. I also got help from fellow professionals to keep processing the difficulties and trauma, and I practiced faith through prayer and affirmations as well as gratitude daily. It was very hard not to hit the rocks, not to succumb to depression, grief, and despair.

But my daily practices (and yes, I had to do them everyday) kept my focus on where I wanted the water to flow — which was life, hope, and light. Thankfully, I was able to get out of bed every day, focus on my creative projects (like writing and publishing, “God Said What?! #MyOrthodoxLife” ), coach my clients, take care of myself and family, exercise, garden and connect with friends.

So where is your focus on a daily basis? Are you hitting rocks? Where do you want your energy and time to flow?

Recognize the following bad habits that may cause you to be hitting rocks:

  1. Not knowing your desires.

2. Putting yourself down often and listening diligently to your horrible inner critic.

3. “Shoulding” yourself into all kinds of activities that you don’t want to do.

4. Ignoring, suppressing or trying to rationalize your way out of your emotions. Honesty and processing are key.

5. Taking things for granted.

I invite you to stop these bad habits, and read this helpful post: 3 Tips to Have a Kinder To-Do List and Heal Your Body. Make the decision to be kinder to yourself.

You may not even realize the inner tape playing subconsciously in your mind. Perhaps it’s been there since childhood. But it’s not helpful and only hurtful. I just realized one of mine recently and pressed stop on the record button. I can feel such a shift in my energy and I know that energy vibrates out to the world at large. When you change your vibration, the world changes with you. It’s an uplift for us all.

So, check your focus and aim for an uplifting of soul energy. Process your emotions, practice self-kindness and self-compassion, write lists of your desires, jot down daily what you don’t take for granted in the world and love yourself a lot more. Your body will thank you! And by all means if you don’t know how to do these things, please schedule your free 20-minute Clarity Call today. Don’t stay stuck. Enjoy my memoir, God Said What?! #MyOrthodoxLife. It was an 8-year long journey of birthing it into the world, but a worthwhile one indeed to share this tale of love, humor, faith, and Kabbalistic mystical happenings.

“What a story! It’s so long since I’ve read a book where I didn’t want it to end. But that’s how I felt with this memoir. I loved the magic and mysticism that weaved through this beautiful true story and learned about Judaism at the same time which I found fascinating. A great read.” — Mrs. M. Cuthbertson
