Are You Living the Life You Really Want?

Mindbody Wellness Clarity Tips

Dear Awesome Woman,

I know that’s a really big question to ask especially at this time with so many changes happening, but it’s been coming to mind lately. I’ve come across situations where people are risking their health for idealized lifestyles run by a limiting belief system.

Sometimes I think that we are missing the forest for the trees — that we are living according to our community’s ideals, society’s ideas or our parent’s goals and not our own. And it’s dangerous for our health.

What would happen if you just let some of those ideals or goals go? If you did something different? Would people scorn you or perhaps envy you for having the guts to do your own thing?

I’ve always been a person who took a different track — a different track than my childhood family, a different track than most of my friends, a different track than society, a different track than my neighbors and a different track than my community. I never intended this and it’s not a rebellious thing.

Though it’s given me discomfort to go off these beaten tracks (especially at the beginning), I get a tremendous feeling of freedom each time that I surrender to that decision and step into the experience. There is such an expansiveness of letting go of the way things are usually done and really doing it my way.

That feeling of expansion in the body and that sense of freedom is healthy. If you find yourself feeling the opposite — constriction in your chest, a furrowing of the brows, a tenseness in your stomach — then it’s a good time to question what’s going on. Are you following certain expectations that are hurting you or your loved ones?

Society has a lot to say about things. And the community that you are a part of also has its expectations to dictate to you. In addition, your childhood programming is often running your subconscious neuropathways. So, if you’re feeling a lot of pressure trying to live up to all those programmings, all those goals, all those ideals and expectations, then take a step back and check the thoughts that are driving you.

Some time ago, I saw a goose with ducklings crossing a very busy street. Luckily, whizzing cars stopped, and there was no bloodshed. But instead of what usually comes to mind when I see this kind of scene which is “oh how cute,” I felt annoyed.

“How dangerous!” I thought and the question that arose for me (and I would have asked that goose if I spoke goose language) was “do you really need to get to the other side?”

And then, because I’m a somatic healer, coach and spiritual person and everything has a life lesson, I turned that question towards myself. I wondered if there were any goals that I had on my plate that weren’t so smart. How was I being like that goose? Like, did I really need to get to the other side? Or if I did want to get to the other side, was I approaching it in a smart way — meaning in a healthy way? What were the belief systems, limiting and unrealistic or expansive and clear, that I was using to get there?

Sometimes those goals we make for ourselves cause us to forget ourselves in the process. We forget our health, our bodies, our souls, and even other people, as we make our way towards those goals.

If you’ve ever done this — been like the goose crossing a busy street, not realizing that you could get to your goal an easier way or not even at all — then take that pause and check in with your body. There are many ways to cross a street and it’s a good idea to make sure that you really want to.

Ask yourself these questions: Are you feeling tense or contracted? Are you feeling excited, expansive?

So moving forward: try to loosely monitor whether you like the goal you set for yourself or not. Keep checking in to see if it’s fitting for you. Decide and readjust accordingly where you’re going, and make movements, big or small, to get there in a healthy way — with kindness to yourself, kindness to others, and kindness to the world.

Whether it’s career related, health related, or relationship related, the body and soul hold the keys to knowing the best way to get where we are wanting to go.
